Radiological Emergency Response

Emergency Response

The Arkansas Department of Health’s Radiation Control colleagues are routinely involved in radiological emergency response. Each Section colleague has a role in the Department’s Radiological Emergency Response Team. The RERT is responsible for responding to potential off-site releases of radioactive material from ENTERGY’S Arkansas Nuclear One (ANO) reactors in Russellville, Arkansas. The Section coordinates with the Nuclear Planning and Response Program, which is responsible for emergency planning as well as response to emergencies involving ANO.

Section Health Physicists are also prepared to respond to a variety of other radioactive material incidents within the State of Arkansas.  These potential radiological events include transportation accidents, lost radioactive sources, and Radiological Dispersal Devices (“dirty bombs”), among others.

The Arkansas Disaster Relief Program is available to assist those impacted by disasters across the state of Arkansas. Under the Arkansas Disaster Relief Program, the Arkansas Division of Emergency Management (ADEM) is able to provide funds for immediate needs for disaster relief to communities experiencing major impacts from a DECLARED disaster. These funds are to be utilized as additional state and federal program availability are being determined.
