Tuberculosis (TB) is caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The bacteria usually attack the lungs, but TB bacteria can attack any part of the body such as the kidney, spine, and brain. Not everyone infected with TB bacteria becomes sick. As a result, two TB-related conditions exist: latent TB infection (LTBI) and TB disease. If not treated properly, TB disease can be fatal.
The mission of the TB Program is to prevent, control, and eliminate tuberculosis in Arkansas.
The ADH TB Program is responsible for all TB control activities in Arkansas including diagnosis and treatment of all TB cases and contact investigations around infectious cases. The program provides treatment for persons diagnosed with latent TB infection. Other activities include:
- TB education for clinicians and the general population
- Comprehensive laboratory support with microscopy
- Culture, sensitivity and genotyping of specimens
- The TB program conducts targeted screening of high-risk populations such as international students from TB endemic countries that are attending colleges and universities.
