Monitoring the HIV/AIDS Epidemic
The Arkansas Department of Health’s HIV/AIDS Surveillance Program is responsible for monitoring all cases of HIV/AIDS in the State of Arkansas. Data collected by this program is used to guide policy decisions, target resources, develop targeted prevention and intervention activities; as well as evaluate services and program activities. This involves monitoring the epidemic by collecting and compiling data from healthcare providers and laboratory reports, maintaining databases, and analyzing and interpreting the collected data on a routine basis for the purpose of regular dissemination to the public. Surveillance Programs’ activities are carried out according to standards established and set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as outlined in the 2014 Technical Guidance for HIV/AIDS Surveillance Programs and the Program Operations Guidelines for STD Prevention.
