In 1987, Arkansas Act 481 expanded Lay Midwife licensure statewide. The Act authorizes and directs the Arkansas State Board of Health (BOH) to adopt regulations governing the Lay Midwife licensure and practice qualifications. The State Board of Health has delegated the authority to administer the program to the Arkansas Department of Health (ADH).
The responsibility of the MAB includes, but is not limited to, advising the Arkansas Department of Health and the Board of Health on proposed revisions of the Lay Midwife Regulations, revieing and offering continuing education and serving as a liaison to the community regarding the practice of Midwifery. The MAB meets at least once annually for one to three hours depending on the topic of discussion. The meetings include Arkansas Department of Health Women’s Health staff.
